How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Social groups are represented by class, gender, age, ethnicity, etc. In the opening to our horror film, the main elements of social groups presented are defined by gender and age as the whole beginning revolves around young, teenage girls. The victim and the killer are both of similar age and gender, creating a comparison among them.
The three victims in the scene are represented as scared and helpless as there is a plot being moved against them with no real evidence of them doing anything wrong. This makes the audience, who are a similar age, feel that the isolated teenagers should be given sympathy as they are in a losing battle. Commonly, throughout horror films, young girls are used as the victim as alot of the audience members will be able to relate and therefore feel their fear. This is intentionally what the producers want to happen through the making of a horror film as it sets the basis of having a scary horror film. On the other hand, going against the conventions, we have decided to make the killer/ stalker a young teenage girl too. This is due to the idea that in our horror film, the ex-friend of the three victims plots the other ones death, leading to the mystery of how two of them died and the third is to be caught. Having a stalker of similar age and the same gender is not seen in the standard horror films, showing how 'The Remaining' challenges these conventions. This sets the scene for the idea of jealously between the three girls and their stalker as this will become the motive for the death of the three targets. As well as this, females are usually shown and implied as the damsal in distress, needing saving from everybody else. However, the stalker in our horror opening is suggested as powerful, controlling and threatening which are all strong characteristics, not commonly seen by a woman in a horror. This explains how certain characteristics within 'The Remaining' challenged the conventions and portrayed these social groups.
