The Ring In the opening scene of the Ring there is already a sense of mystery because the audience are given a clue as to what the film is to be about. At the end of this clip the viewers are also left on a cliff- hanger because the girl is left wondering who or what turned her television on. This makes an effective opening scene because the public are already spooked by the paranormal sense in the scene and they are forced to feel like they have to watch the film to put themselves at ease of what the occurrence was. The main character in the opening of the Ring is stereotypically a unprotected, vulnerable teenage girl. Although, going against the general conventions is the setting of a ordinary house which doesn't create fear or terror at all. However, the genre of the film is psychological which is all about reality so setting it in a home which is an ordinary everyday-life location, could create fright and fear among the audience. Smiley Unlike 'the Ring', there are some jumpy scenes included in the opening of this film 'Smiley'. Although we do not see the villan directly at the start, fear is already being inflicted upon the audience as they watch the female characters describe him. Likewise, in 'the Excorist' we see what is described as the 'damsal in distress' doing the typical girly teenage thing of playing on her phone subconciously waiting for something to go wrong. Once again, the victim in the opening is the typical teenage girl who is isolated and terrified. Terror and fright is brought upon the audience as they are surrounded with the basics of the villains description and his traits that make him so evil. This is an effective opening because already questions are being considered in the viewers brain as to who the villan is. These thoughts make the audience want to watch the rest of the film to find out what happens. The location of this opening is similar to that of 'The Ring' as its very normal and usual to see in everyday life. The Woman in Black The Woman in Black has a very effective opening because there has already been, what we assume, three deaths and the villian is not shown until the end which hasn't been done in other openings I have shown. The fact that the villain has already been displayed in the first few minutes suggests they will be appearing throughout the film at unexpected times. This captures the audiences attention and makes them feel slightly on edge. The start of the opening includes some non- diegetic sound which creates a mysterious and ambiguous atmosphere. The non- diegetic instruments build up as the little girls near the window to create tension and fear umong the audience. The location of this opening is very effective as it is based in the past in a creepy- looking room which today alone would cause the audience some tension. The idea that it is set in the past is effective because with the rumours at that time of witches and the supernatural establish alarm and panic amongst them. |
